Just saw an announcement on College Football Live that Texas, ESPN, and ISP? are partnering on a 20 year, $300,000,000 agreement and will launch the Longhorns channel in September.

Pretty much, itll be a subscription service.

Some things to keep in mind:

ESPN is going to have to pony up around abother $400 million for the actual production
ESPN is now tied to the fortunes of a single team

and shockingly enough.... this really didnt go over that well here in Austin. But considering we are going to start bringing in about $35 million a year in just TV revenue, its getting us more than the Big 10 or Pac 12 network could.

And whats the reasoning behind this? Is Longhorn sports really that big that justifys such a huge investment?

Yes. We are the only reason the Big 12 survived, and will probably be the reason the Big 12 eventually dies anyway. Our options now are to keep the Big 12 alive for the next 20 years, or go independant in football, at which point ESPN already owns our TV rights like NBC does for ND. We are not going to go independant, nor did we affect any of the other deals that pump cash to our conference mates.

And lets be honest, every one of your schools would have jumped at this deal as well. We just wanted to start a network. ESPN is the one who came to us and threw all this cash our way. I have no problem at all with ESPN funding improvements we need/want to make to facilities and pumping in academic money at a time where our State is in a budget pinch. This also brings jobs to Austin and increases our exposure out there.

There is no way they can fill the channel with just Longhorns sports. They need more. Here are some suggestions:

Life of Bevo, a reality show that focuses on the life and drama of a major college mascot.

The Biggest Loser with David McWilliams

Super Nanny Mack Brown. Watch Coach Brown keep his players out of the clink and tabloids.

Longhorn Girls Gone Wild. Dear Comcast, please add the Longhorns Channel to the Sports Package...

Campus Cops / Austin's Most Wanted. Cameo appearance by Sgt John during the annual riot/wet t-shirt contest in the alley behind the TKE house.
