Kyle Orton, panic time yet?

What a horrendous start to his preseaon last night with 3 first half picks. This coming off a scrimmage where he was booed by the fans for too many picks....think there is some 2nd guessing in Denver yet? McDaniels is saying the right things and saying they are fine....but are they? Will Orton make it out of TC with a starting job? Can Chris Simms take over? I was high on Orton and his chance in this offense, but man is this not a good start! What are your thoughts on Orton going forward?

So is there a QB controversy in Denver? New coach Josh McDaniels says no.
"I feel very confident where we're at," McDaniels said after the game. "There's no reason to start tailspinning into this and that when we've only had one preseason game."
But this wasn't Orton's first poor performance of the preseason. He also threw a pair of interceptions in a scrimmage and was booed by the crowd at Invesco Field.
Last night, Orton completed six of his first seven passes for 54 yards. But he was just 3-of-9 for 35 yards with the three INTs thereafter — against a defense that picked off just 12 passes all of last season.
Said Orton: "I'm not worried about it. I've got a lot of confidence in myself. I think my team has a lot of confidence in me."

I think Simms will end up with the job. From the mouth of McDaniels himself:

Daniel Williams, of The Denver Daily News, reports Denver Broncos head coach Josh McDaniels said QB Chris Simms still has a chance to win the starting job. This is mildly surprising news, since most observers probably assumed Kyle Orton was going to be under center in Week 1. But McDaniels is definitely keeping the door open for Simms. "We're going to evaluate the quarterbacks just like we do every other position, and if Chris is the most effective quarterback in our system by September, then he'll start," McDaniels told the paper.

It was week 1 of preseason. Basically a meaningless game anyways. Its too early too make any kind of judgement right now. But if he hasn't improved by week 3 in preseason and reeks of suck the following week, he might find himself holding a clipboard and playing backup.

I'm coming to a serious man-love crisis here. I look at Orton as one of the best sleepers in football this year because of his situation and surprisingly good stats last year in Chicago (he was better than guys like P.Manning late into the regular season).

But all I'm hearing out of Broncos training camp is that Orton has people worried. It's getting so bad that someone's fantasy team name the other day was:
"Orton Hears a Boo"

He just may not be the right fit for the offense. Orton is a west coast intermediate passing kind of guy. The spread doesnt work for him.

Simms has the arm to get the ball down field. I took Orton as a backup, but he can easily be ditched.

Is there a smiley emoticon for :knee-jerk reaction: ?

First friggin' game action with a brand new team with brand new everything including the offensive scheme.

I'd be way more worried about my first round draft pick missing important reps with his teammates than I would about an experienced mature QB making an initially rough transition.

orton has been very good at times . . . i think his problem is more in his head, although he is somewhat limited in the skills dept too . . . ;)

Sims was in the same position and did better so although I agree with your sentiment I think there is room for discussion considering the similar transitions.

The ball seemed to leave Orton sooooo slowly compared to Cutler, I'm not surprised he was picked. I don't know what Simms weaknesses are yet. I do know its going to be a long year.

Just dont tell him every game in the NFL is a big game and you will be just fine.

I think it is WAY too early to panic. If they can run, like in the past, and the defense can do anything...they have the Wrs to make even Orton or Simms look good. I do think Simms takes over eventually though....
