Most Underrated/Overrated Players in the NFL?

As a Saints fan this may be a little biased but I think WR Lance Moore is one of the most underrated players in football. Makes very little mistakes, great ST guys and could be a good #2/3 WR on most teams. There are a bunch of overrated players and most are WRs because their ego is usually bigger than their play. I think the guy who may have done the least with the most oppourtunity and promise coming into the season has to be Shonn Greene.

Most overrated - Demarcus Ware

All I ever hear is how dominant the Cowboys defense is and how every team has to figure out how to handle Ware. Then I watch them play and I never see him having any impact on the game. Has this guy ever had a game changing play during an actual regular season game?

Most underrated - Hines Ward/Thomas Jones

Either of these players are ever mentioned in any of the top lists at their position. Every year they are written off as a fluke the year before and not seen as true game changing performers...and every year they produce. Ward might be the smartest WR to ever play the game. He lacks flat out physical talent in speed, height, strength, etc but yet he still anchors his team each and every year. Jones is always good enough to pick up and hold a team over but never worth keeping as a feature back. Yet year in and year out he is near or at the top of the league in rush yds and productivity.

I will disagree with you on DeMarcus Ware. He is a BEAST! 20 sacks in 2008, and hell, even this year, in our 1 win, the one against Houston, he CARRIED the D by putting so much pressure on Shaub. Now, I agree there are times he may appear to "disappear" but the main problem is, the rest of the Dallas D. Our secondary is GARBAGE! The Giants ripped them to shreds. Interesting Stat: Dallas has 13 sacks as a team, 8 are DeMarcus!! He was the reason our D was ranked 5th before the Giants got to them. God forbid he gets hurt, we would fall in Jags territory....

Overrated for me - Tony Romo
Love him for fantasy, love him as a cowboys fan. But what good is a QB who chokes once the games start to matter. Still hope he gets over it, but the way people talk about him sometimes, its like he already has multiple superbowl wins, and tons of great playoff comebacks.

Underrated - I like Lance Moore for that pick as well. But I am going with Peyton Hillis. I just dont know what more this guy can do before the world realize how good he is. He is getting some recognition now, but it still feels like lots of people just are waiting for him to drop a stinker, and he just does not.

I dont think Hines Ward is underrated though, I have never had any discussion around him that has ever used the word "Fluke". Maybe cause I play a lot of FF, so I know to look for him in round 5, or maybe I know a lot of steelers fans so I know how good a blocker he is. But anytime I watch a steelers game, they are going to mention, at least 20 times, how Hines Ward is the best WR blocker in the history of the game according to them :/

I think Ward is underrated in some things but he is known league wide as the toughest WR, best blocking WR, great route runner, and catches almost anything. I guess he is underrated because he is never discussed as a top 10 guy but there is no one more consistent.

ward was MUCH better when he was younger....obvious statement, i know, but he's definitely given his due.
As for the blocking crap, it's because he plays in Pittsburgh, nothing else. All WR's block(except Randy lol), Ward's turned into a cheap shot artist, and because he plays for the Steelers, he's just "scrappy." Ask Keith Rivers about the unprotected blindside "block" Ward threw that cost him his rookie year. He's dirty, plain and simple lol.

Under-Rated: Eli Manning

Other than the fat paycheck, he seems to get over looked often. Kid may not be his brother, but he knows how to win and he is a very good QB in his own right. Best QB in the NFC East, but never looked at that way.

Over-Rated: Dwight Freeney

I know, guy is a freak! He is also one of the most disruptive pass rushers in the game.....or is he? His numbers this year do not support it and the truth is even if he is, he is also a one trick pony. Freeney is a liability against the run and is a pure speed rusher. He does one thing well and the rest of the time bring very little to that defense. Add to this that he disappears more time that not when he is on the road and you have a one skill player (speed rush) who struggles outside of the fast turf of Lucas Oil. If you look at his 16 1/2 sacs from the start of the 09 season, 10 1/2 of them were recorded at home! I know the highlights and big plays are nice, but he gets a lot of publicity due to a few plays a year.

What are your thoughts on Vernon Davis being underrated?
I would argue he was over-rated when he first was drafted, and nearly got his butt kicked out of the league with his swelled head, off field issues, and lack of performance.

However, now he is starting to reach his hype. But I would not say he is under-rated yet, as he still gets drafted pretty dang high.
