  • The Nashville Tennessean reports free-agent WR Matt Jones is leaning toward signing with the Bengals. The offer the Titans have on the table today is for right around $700,000. If he takes it, he could come in and compete with Justin Gage, Kenny Britt and Nate Washington for playing time in 2010.

Reports out of Cincy say Matt Jones is now a Bengal.

It is confirmed that Matt Jones has signed a 1 year deal worth 700K with the Cincinnati Bengals.

Of course he still has to make the team and perform, but Cincy might have just locked up its starting flanker. Probably signs Lav Coles pink slip.

(Rotoworld) Bengals signed WR Matt Jones to a one-year contract. Analysis: The Cincinnati Enquirer reports that the deal is worth roughly $700K. Jones, 27 in April, is a good upside signing with minimal risk at this price. While he isn't even a lock to make the team, the Bengals may have plucked their 2010 starting flanker off the February waiver wire. Laveranues Coles becomes a serious candidate for release. Andre Caldwell will likely remain in the slot, while Jones and Jerome Simpson battle for snaps outside. The move won't preclude Cincinnati from using another pick on a wideout, though.

I'm admittedly a Jones honk. He was by far the most popular public figure in this state (sports or otherwise) during the time he was a Razorback and I lived here in Little Rock the first time. I was really upset when the news broke about his drug arrest and subsequent probation violation because I haven't seen very many more athletic inviduals come out of the college ranks in my lifetime. I absolutely LOVE this move for the Bengals, especially at the low cost/risk. He's a huge target for Carson in the red zone to replace Chris Henry (R.I.P.), he's still young with low mileage since he sat out all last year, and guess what? They just landed themselves the ORIGINAL Wildcat QB.. he could probably teach those formations since they originated with him and Houston Nutt at UA. Great get.

And this is why he is was signed to the OC Black Knights this morning. I think his head will be in the air and not up his arse this time and the possibilities for him in that offense are limitless.

You know I was just thinking that myself.

The AFC North has always been a copycat league. As soon as Pittsburgh broke out Randel-El as Wr/QB/ slash.....everyone else tried too.

This is a good move by Cincy to a point. He will be a great RZ target, as well as a great chain mover to replace T.J. But they still need to draft or find the deep threat that Henry provided them....to free up Ocho more.

But this also tells me they won't draft a TE early like most are predicting. With this they will instead keep the 3wr and 4wr set. Keep the TE for blocking.

Which makes no sense since they drafted the most prolific pass-catching TE coming out of college football last year in Chase Coffman. I was very surprised he wasn't utilized more, unless he was just struggling in training camp.
I think Jones can be a very viable deep threat, by the way. He had some moments in Jax, and he runs in the 4.5's.

On Coffman: First he was injured in college, and it took longer than expected to come back. Then he had issues with the play book. Add to that his total lack of blocking, and playing on the line with one hand down...and Cincy had no faith to play him. Then they IRed him for more injury issues. However, I do think they utilize him now...so no need to draft a TE as you state.

As for Jones...yes he was clocked at 4.3 or so at the combine...but with age and use I bet it is slower now. Add to that the rust from being out a whole year and I would not rely on him as my deep threat.

But I still like the acquisition.
