Week 1 Observations and Thoughts.

Saints Vs Packers. Both offenses looked outstanding. Should be able to
move the ball with little resistance, especially through the air.
Greg Jennings proved some doubters wrong. Last year he barely recorded a
catch while Finley was still healthy, and in 2011 he already has a TD.
The fuzzy picture of who the better GB RB would be is starting to become a
little clearer. While Ryan Grant is in the incumbent guy, Starks looks like
the guy to own. Not only did his running look better, but he also got the
TD.
On the Saints side, it was business as usual for Brees. Chuck the ball all
over the field and use every weapon. It looks like he has a new favorite
toy in Darren Sproles too. His presence on the team really muddies up the
RB waters. At this point there's not really a Saints RB that you'd like to
be starting. Injuries may end up defining this group for fantasy relevance.
In WR news, Colston ends up on the shelf for 4 weeks which should increase
in targets for Meachum and Henderson. Moore is still a little dinged up
himself, so Id look more at the 1st 2 guys as solid options for the first
quarter of the season.

Atlanta Vs Chicago. Atlanta looks a little bit lost to start the season.
Either that, or the Chicago defense is REALLY good.
I wouldn't necessarily say the Chicago offense looked good in this one, but
they didn't look bad either. Cutler moved the ball fairly well, especially
to Forte.
However, every time they attempted to run the ball it looked as though Forte
ran directly into the pile and fell down. I don't think this is for lack of
talent on his part though. The O line is suspect and he continues to be a
stronger receiver than runner.
As for WRs, Knox looked ok, and Roy looked like, well, Roy. After recording
his final catch in the game he limped onto the sidelines and gave his
patented "1st down" sign to the crowd that was very defeated. He left the
game with a groin injury and would not return. I don't think this injury
does much for fantasy purposes. Maybe a slight boost to Earl Bennett. I'd
probably suggest a bigger bump in value for TE Kellen Davis. He is a giant
of a man and looked like a capable receiver, especially when being targeted
in the RZ.
On the Atlanta side, Matt Ryan looked lost. His offense line gave little
protection from Julius Peppers and company, and he found himself outside the
pocket a lot. The Bears D did an outstanding job once in the RZ of holding
the Falcons out.
The RBs became a favorite bail out target for Ryan in this game. Snelling
recorded 5 catches, Rodgers got 3, and even Turner caught 3 balls. While
running, Turner looked pretty average in my opinion. A lot of 3 yards and a
cloud of dust runs. He did break one rush for 56 yards which boosted his
day though.
Roddy remains the favorite WR target. Jones and Gonzalez had about the same
amount of work when Roddy wasn't getting his. Coverage was pretty tight all
day though.
No key injuries with fantasy implications.

Cincinatti Vs Cleveland. Ugly football being played here. About what
everyone would expect.
Dalton plays ok in his first NFL start but has to be relieved by Bruce
Gradkowski midway through. Gradkowski takes over and might have played a
bit better. Granted, he gets the biggest play of the game when Cincy
catches Cleveland napping on D and quickly snaps the ball and gets it 41 Yds
down field to AJ Green. Doesn't mean he's the guy to own though.
Benson got a full workload and made good use of it. He's the only show in
town on the ground.
Gresham was the favorite target in this offense and came up with the only
"real" receiving TD in this game. AJ Green's just doesn't count.
For Cleveland there is little to feel good about. Mistakes were made all
over the place, and plenty of them coming from QB Colt McCoy. He looked
down right awful.
Peyton Hillis was very unimpressive too. He gets the ball 17 times and only
musters 57 yards. Not exactly the bowling ball type running from last year.
He did add 6 receptions though to lead this team.
As a Cleveland WR that's not really the thing you want to hear. No WR
recorded more than 3 catches and none of them looked too spectacular.
Watson looked decent at TE, but between Massaquoi and Evan Moore, I'm not
sure who is less ownable.

Buffalo Vs Kansas City. Frankly I don't even want to talk about this game.
What a disaster.
Buffalo looks like a Pro Bowl team after back alley raping Kansas City in
week 1. Ryan Fitzpatrick did everything he needed to do to win in this one.
He didn't throw for a ton of yards, but he did toss 4 TD passes.
Fred Jackson did everything he needed to do too. Gained 112 Yds on the
ground but gets his TD poached from him by CJ Spiller. Not a thing of
beauty for FJax owners.
The WR corps looked good led by a strong outing from TE Chandler. Comes up
big with 2 TDs. Will likely be a top WW selection this week.
As far as Kansas City is concerned, just end the season now. Cassel is
completely lost and unsupported on offense. There is not enough weapons and
not enough time given by the offensive line to do anything.
Charles has a junk day, but doesn't get too many opportunities though. For
fantasy purposes, his day gets saved with a late TD pass from Cassel,
otherwise this is a trash game from him.
The WRs look awful. The absence of a true TE threat gives double and even
triple coverage to Dwayne Bowe. The rest of the group just can't make it
happen either.
In injury news, KC loses an absolute star in Eric Berry on defense. This
plays a part in how well Buffalo did in the passing game.

Philly Vs STL. The sideline and locker room becomes a favorite destination
for STL players as they limp off the field.
Philly starts strong, but in sloppy fashion. Vick looked super human
running the ball, and very average throwing it. Only connects on 43% of his
throws, but does toss 2 TDs. Both of them were very unnatural though. On
the 1st he's flushed out of the pocket and DeSean bails him out with super
speed in the end zone to separate from coverage. On the other, it's a
broken play type of shuffle pass to McCoy that gets in. Vick adds 98 yards
rushing.
McCoy was the feature runner though. He was gaining yards all over the
place, including a few big plays. Ronnie never really has an impact until
the game is well in hand.
DeSean Jackson looked good, but Maclin was absent for everything but a 20yd
reception. He is clearly not ready to be playing football just yet.
For STL there is not much good that comes away. Made a lot of mistakes and
suffered a lot of injuries. Bradford ends up leaving the game with a finger
injury late and looks fairly pedestrian while he was on the field. Having a
lack of options on offense hurt though.
SJax looked like a beast before he surrendered to a quad injury. No big
surprise here though. Caddy comes in and plays very well in his absence.
He looks like the RB to own should SJax miss anytime and will likely be a
top WW pick up this week.
The WR corps takes a big hit with Amendola getting hurt, but it sounds like
the injury isn't as bad as originally believed. That is very good for STL,
especially since Sims Walker is only able to come up with 1 catch for 5
yards and Lance Kendricks drops a ton of balls tossed his way. I'm sure
this was a tough secondary for these young WRs to face though.

Detroit Vs Tampa Bay. Didn't see much from this game so I have little
input.
Stafford played well, connecting with Cal on 2 TD passes and another to Tony
Scheffler. Dude can flat out play.
Jahvid Best did an average job of moving the ball, but surrendered about 33%
of the carries to Jerome Harrison.
The WR corps looks solid. Pettigrew did a nice job of moving the chains,
but Scheffler stole his glory. If you haven't seen the Scheffler Td, you
really should check it out. Guy does a pretty funny celebration as a pirate
after it. Calvin Johnson is Calvin Johnson and does his thing. Burleson
adds too.
Tampa Bay decides early in this game that they just don't feel like running
the ball today. While they were trailing, Freeman threw 43 passes and
connected on 28 of them. He finds Mike Williams late for his only TD.
The RBs get little work in this one. Blount ends the game with 5 carries
for 15 yards and gets no work on passing downs. He's obviously not ready for
pass protection. This allows Earnest Graham to steal the limelight at RB.
He grabs 8 passes and is the leading receiver.
Again, another WR corps who hates hearing that the RB is the leading pass
catcher. Kellen shows up, mostly in the 2nd half, to be the #2 on that
list. Mike WIlliams owners were all sweating until that late TD too.

Jacksonville Vs Tenn. Another game Id rather not talk about.
Luke McCown makes the start here and is below average throwing the ball.
Although he's fairly efficient with it and doesn't make mistakes, it's not
his arm that wins this game.
It rests mostly on MJD's legs. He has a nice game on the ground and adds a
TD. He does get spelled a lot by Karim though who gets 14 carries. Keep an
eye on that.
The receivers are a product of their QB and play calling. Mike Thomas is
the only ownable one in this group as far as I'm concerned.
On the Tennessee side it's about the same. Hass makes his first start as a
Titan, plays very pedestrian but with a little most risky play calling.
Britt makes him look good though.
Chris Johnson looks the way most of us probably thought he would. No
running room, no big gains. Needs a few weeks to get his legs back.
Britt is an absolute beast. Although he doesn't lead this team in
receptions, he's the big play guy.

Baltimore Vs Pittsburgh. What the hell just happened?
Baltimore and Joe Flacco did whatever they wanted to Pittsburgh. The
usually tough "Steel Curtain" let Flacco have 224 yds and 3 TDs. Hell of a
good start for this cat.
Rice piles on too gaining 150 all purpose yards. Easily his best game for
his career vs Pitt, and it might end that way too. Looks like a total stud.
Ricky spells him late and is not truly involved in this offense.
This WR corps is really shallow, but Dickson and Boldin get it done with
Rice doing the rest. Dickson might be a nice look on the WW this week.
On the Pitt side, everyone looks like crap. Turnovers bury any chance of Ben
or Mendenhall having a good game.
Somehow Mike Wallace still finds 100 yds, but its pretty bleak elsewhere.
Sanders does get a TD, but I don't think he's necessarily starter worthy any
other week. Hines is still pretty well involved.

Houston Vs Indy. It's a blood bath!
Everything goes right for Houston. Schaub does his part and tosses for 220
yards in an ugly fantasy performance. He gets picked off twice too. Not
exactly the stats you'd think he'd have with 34 points on the board.
Ben Tate is the star in this one, especially after D Ward goes out with an
injury. It was a fairly even split before then. If Houston goes into week
2 with no Foster and a banged up Ward, Tate is going to be big again.
Andre is everything in the passing game. Kevin Walter pulls his usual "I'm
gonna catch one pass and hang it up for the year" routine. Don't think this
necessarily has a big boost for Jacoby Jones either. Probably just more
Andre. Some might say it boosts Owen Daniels, but he needs to be a part of
this offense to get a boost in the offense.
News from Indy. This is exactly what they expected. Collins was a shadow
of Brett Favre 2010. Old, confused, lost. He'll get better though.
The running game was junk. No Indy RB should be started in any format at
this point.
Reggie Wayne proved his worth though. After blasting the team for going
with Kerry Collins he catches 7 passes for 106 and a TD from him. He's the
only one doing big damage though.

Arizona Vs Carolina. A true back and forth battle here.
Arizona didn't really look all that great. Kolb didn't either. His stat
line is 300+ yards and 2 TDs, but a huge chunk comes on 1 play from Early
Doucet.
Beanie looks the best of anyone. He runs the ball well, gets all the
carries, and leads the team in receptions. What a beast so far.
Kolb tries to get the ball to Fitz, but it mostly comes up short. This
allows most of the passes to go elsewhere.
Cam is the man! He goes ape **** on the Arizona secondary, mostly to S
Smith.
The running game is terrible. Don't start DeAngelo or JStew until one of
them proves to be the man.
Go right ahead and start Steve Smith though. He looks like he's back!.
Greg Olson is a favorite target too.

San Diego Vs Minnesota. One team is really good. The other is really bad.
Scoreboard doesn't tell the whole story.
If the scoreboard was going to tell the true story about this game and these
2 teams it would say Chargers 35, Vikings 0. Rivers does what he can
against the Vikings D, and that means mostly checking down to RBs and Gates.
Minnesota plays 2 deep in the secondary for most of the game trying to keep
the lid on the deep game.
The RBs take total advantage of this. Tolbert and Matthews combine for 12
receptions, but most of them go to Tolbert. Matthews is clearly the
"between the 20s guy". I think the RB to own here is Tolbert, regardless of
his having 3 TDs on this day. He's just the better player.
WRs have a quiet day with the great coverage, but Gates makes it work.
Typical chain mover. You'll hear from VJax in coming weeks.
McNabb has an awful day! The Vikings get a small lead and decide to play
small ball. Rarely does he get an opportunity to throw the ball, and when
he does, it's on 3rd and 6 in clear passing situations. This offense is way
to conservative.
AP is AP and does his thing. Again, I think he too is effected by this
concervo approach.
The WRs do nothing. Best play of the game is the opening kick off going to
the house by Percy Harvin. If you don't get points for KRs, you're not a
happy camper as a Percy owner right now. I wouldn't suggest starting him
until this offense proves they will throw the ball.

SF Vs Seattle. Low scoring game battle until Ted Ginn happens.
Very little offense to cheer for from the SF side. Alex Smith continued to
lead them down the field only to settle for FGs. Wasn't exactly a great or
aggressive display of offensive force.
Gore had little running room all day. Nothing doing here. Still getting
all the carries though.
Vernon Davis seems to be the only SF receiver worth owning. Crabtree was
nowhere to be found. Braylon was quiet too. Ted Ginn however was the man,
but it was all special teams.
On the Seattle side, TJax was a little more aggressive, but it didn't work
out until late.
Lynch was below average while getting the lions share of the carries. He
needs more running room and more work to be effective.
Mike Williams and Baldwin were the only 2 bright spots in the passing game.
Baldwin's big play put the game in reach before Ted Ginn happened.

Washington Vs NYG. Who sucks less?
Washington sucks less on this day. Good Rex showed up today and saved Bad
Rex for another day. He was quite efficient on his way to a 300 yd passing
day with 2 scores. I have a feeling a beat up NYG's defense made him look
good.
Hightower got a ton of work. Helu only took 1 carry away. Hightower added
3 receptions in the passing game. He's the man right now. Who knows who it
will be by week 5 though.
Santana Moss was solid, as was Fred Davis. Chris Cooley who? They have
Fred Davis! Jabar Gaffney added some nice catches including a TD as well.
For New York is was a junk day. Eli started crying in the pre-game and kept
it going all afternoon. Throws for 268 and 1 INT. YUCK. Needs to play a
lot better than this, especially considering he was facing one of the bottom
5 passing defenses from last year.
Bradshaw was very average but did get a TD from 6 out. Jacobs took 6
carries for 29. Bradshaw is obviously the RB you want at this point, but I
dont know how badly you should be wanting him.
Nicks was a beast. Every pass he caught gave Eli a break from looking like
a droopy eyed armless child. Manningham chipped in with a little help.

NYJ Vs Dallas. Mistakes will be made.
The Jets aired it out! Sanchez threw the ball 44 times. Completed just 26
though. 335 yds, 2 TDs, 1 INT. Not bad at all.
Only 15 running plays called for the Jets in this game. With LT getting 5
of them, that's just not going to leave enough work for Shonn Greene to get
it done. Wait to start him again until they face a team they can dominate.
Feel free to start LT though. Dude is all over the place in the passing
game. When he's not getting the ball, Santonio is doing a nice job of
moving the chains. The TDs will come when Plaxico isn't stealing them away.
Keller also looked pretty good. Maybe this isn't a running team after all.
