My Playoff Proposal

My playoff system leaves the current bowl system intact.

A 16 team playoff played over a period of 4 weeks.

The 11 conference winners get automatic bids. There are 5 at large bids which can be given to the 5 highest ranked teams in the BCS that did not win their conference. (This gives them a reason to keep the BCS so no one gets their feelings hurt ).

The other 30 bowl games are just left where they're at and the other 60 teams can have their day in the spotlight.

Over a period of 3 weeks, 16 teams are dwindled down to 2 culminating in the BCS national title game.

Now, how hard is that. The NCAA would make more money because it would have it's marquee teams playing for 4 straight weeks. It adds no additional weeks to the bowl season like they claim a playoff would and the BCS gets 5 spots to insert the teams they feel are worthy despite not winning their conference, or Notre Dame.

It's just that simple.

lots of problems with this one.

first of all, it makes the season forever and a half long. second, a playoff that big *definitely* makes the other bowl games feel fairly petty and useless.

another big issue would be with the selection of teams. not all 11 conferences need an auto bid. no reason for someone like the sun belt to get an auto bid #16 seed to lose by 40 in the first round. in this year's BCS there would have been probably 7 of your 16 teams as non-BCS schools, assuming tcu and byu both got at larges. that leaves only 3 (or maybe 4 if byu didnt make it) at larges for big schools. so.... texas, alabama, ohio state and then one more, probably texas tech. you havent really created any more room for these teams, just added in a bunch of fluff games against buffalo, tulsa, and troy.

anyway. not to rain on the parade, but thats my thoughts.

How does this make the season any longer. There are 4 bowl weeks. You use the weeks already in existance.

The other games are already useless. The only people who watch the non-BCS bowls are the fans of those teams, who will still watch them.

Then who gets into the playoffs? If you use the BCS, then teams still have legitimate gripes. Every other level of football requires to win your division or have the best record of the non division winners. If you don't get into a national playoff by winning your conference, then what's the point of conferences?
