Dallas Cowboys WR News

Roy Williams:

Williams has finally started to show signs of developing chemistry with Tony Romo, and the two of them connected for a couple of touchdowns on Wednesday morning, the Ft. Worth Star-Telegram reports. After Williams' awful stint with Dallas after last season's trade, and checkered medical history, there's been some concern over whether he can replace Terrell Owens' production as Romo's top wide receiver target. A good showing in camp should help reassure his fantasy owners, but he still has a lot to prove this season.

Patrick Crayton:

According to the Associated Press, Patrick Crayton is locked in as the Cowboys' starting flanker. Miles Austin will open the season as Dallas' third wideout, entering in three-receiver sets. The Cowboys have talked about using more two-tight end looks, however, which could limit their use of three wides. Austin should still be good four around 650-800 yards, but Crayton is a superior PPR pick.

Miles Austin:

Tim MacMahon, of The Dallas Morning News, reports Dallas Cowboys wide receivers coach Ray Sherman doesn't believe there is any competition for the team's No. 2 receiver job. He believes it is owned by Patrick Crayton. "Patrick is the guy right now," Sherman said. "Patrick is having a very good camp, and I think the guys are really in tune. They don't care about who starts." Having Crayton as the No. 2 isn't a knock on WR Miles Austin, who is having a strong training camp. Sherman just believes the more experienced and consistent Crayton has earned the right to start.

And...a guy who has been a possible sleeper the last couple years, and one of "Jerrys boys" at one time...

Isaiah Stanbeck:

Cowboys WR/KR Isaiah Stanbeck's roster spot is in jeopardy this season.Stanback has been among the most injury-bitten players in the league the past couple of seasons. He finally returned to practice after sitting out the first week with a hamstring injury, but he's been struggling mightily with drops.

Update on the Sam Hurd/Miles Austin battle:
Source: Jeff Caplan - the Fort Worth Star-Telegram
Jeff Caplan, of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, reports Dallas Cowboys head coach Wade Phillips praised WR Sam Hurd's performance in the team's preseason opener Thursday, Aug. 13. Hurd had two holding penalties in the game, but he caught all five of his passes for 79 yards. Phillips said, "It was obvious that Sam played real well, and he'll get some playing time because of that."

I just heard that Roy Williams hurt his hand. Is this true? I'm looking for a link. If I find it I'll post it.

News: Williams is slated to get his wrist X-rayed Sunday instead of participating in the Cowboys' afternoon practice, the Dallas Morning News reports. [-]
Impact: We'll have to see if this is just a precautionary measure, or if the wideout is dealing with an issue that could cause him to miss further time.

From Rotoworld via the Associated Press as of 4:51 est Monday afternoon:

Roy E. Williams (wrist) returned to Cowboys practice Monday.

The wrist sprain only cost him one practice. Williams was first in line to catch a pass during a throwing session. We like Roy E. to catch 60+ balls and approach 1,000 yards this season, but he's been overvalued in early drafts.

I drafted him (too high) but he really doesn't give me warm fuzzies. I also eye balled Crayton in the mid rounds but just couldn't pull the trigger.

SOMEONE will be catching balls in Dallas besides Witten, I just have no clue who it's going to be.

I have him in some leagues as my WR2 and think he's amongst the best available in that value range.

I just don't buy into Crayton, no matter how good they say he looks in camp. This guy has supposed to surprise for what, 3 years??? Time for them to give one of these young guys a shot IMO. Crayton is nothing special at all.

Crayton is the perfect flanker, and will catch many passes to move the chains. He will be the guy to aid Witten, leaving the homerun stuff to Roy, Sam, and Miles. Those are the 3 who seem to me to be splitting action.

Whomever emerges as Dallas' #2 will still be 4th in the food chain behind Witten, Roy, and Barber/Felix as far as targets go, I would think.

Crayton's high-water mark was in '07 when he posted 697/7 TD's, and if he locks this gig down those are realistic expectations.

I've seen Crayton play too much to buy into him. He's very average IMO, and doesn't have good hands.

With the TO threat gone, he may just disappear.
