2011 FA QB Discussion Thread

This one is a bit more in depth as there is probably no more important offensive backup position than your #2 or #3 quarterback. This will also include restricted free agents if applicable and will be noted.

Where will they go? How does this affect your fantasy team, if at all?

Baltimore Ravens - Marc Bulger

Buffalo Bills - Brian Brohm (RFA)

Carolina Panthers - Matt Moore

Chicago Bears - Caleb Hanie

Cincinnati Bengals - Jordan Palmer
(Note that starter Carson Palmer is threatening retirement if not traded)

Cleveland Browns - Seneca Wallace
(Note that Jake Delhomme is a FA in 2012)

Denver Broncos - Brady Quinn

Detroit Lions - Drew Stanton

Houston Texans - Matt Leinart
(Note that backup Dan Orlovsky is a FA in 2012)

Jacksonville Jaguars - Luke McCown

Kansas City Chiefs - Brodie Croyle

Miami Dolphins - Chad Pennington, Tyler Thigpen
(Note that starter Chad Henne is a FA in 2012)

Minnesota Vikings - Tarvaris Jackson, Rhett Bomar
(Farve retired, Joe Webb is still under contract for 3 more seasons)

New Orleans Saints - Patrick Ramsey

New York Giants - Jim Sorgi

New York Jets - Mark Brunell, Kellen Clemens
(Note Erik Ainge and Kevin OConnell are FA's in 2012)(5 QBs???)

Oakland Raiders - Bruce Gradkowski

Philadelphia Eagles - Michael Vick
(Note that Kevin Kolb is a FA in 2012)

Pittsburgh Steelers - Dennis Dixon
(Note that Charlie Batch is a FA in 2012)

San Diego Chargers - Billy Volek

San Francisco 49ers - Alex Smith, Troy Smith
(Note that David Carr is a FA in 2012)

Seattle Seahawks - Matt Hasselbeck
(Note that Charlie Whitehurst is a FA in 2012)

Tennessee Titans - Kerry Collins, Chris Simms
(Note that "starter" Vince Young will NOT be back with the team in 2011)

Washington Redskins - Rex Grossman

Ill take a stab at this:

Baltimore Ravens - Marc Bulger - I see no reason for the Ravens not to sign him up again. Bulger could easily step in and run the Ravens offense at a high level.

Buffalo Bills - Brian Brohm (RFA) - Brohm will be back because I dont think there will be any interest to sign him.

Carolina Panthers - Matt Moore - I dont see the Panthers getting him back, especially with Tony Pike still under contract. Moore will catch on somewhere a dependable #2 is needed, maybe Tenneseee.

Chicago Bears - Caleb Hanie - Todd Collins is a joke. Hanie, with proper training, does appear to have the ability to run the Martz offense.

Cincinnati Bengals - Jordan Palmer
(Note that starter Carson Palmer is threatening retirement if not traded) - Palmer is probably only on this roster because of Carson. UFL fodder here.

Cleveland Browns - Seneca Wallace
(Note that Jake Delhomme is a FA in 2012) - He is a Holmgren guy, so I expect him to be brought back.

Denver Broncos - Brady Quinn - UFL. At this point its pretty safe to say his career is probably over unless he is an extremely low end #3. Could be signed by a team for training camp to be used as an expendable target to hone a defense on.

Detroit Lions - Drew Stanton - Unless the Lions go for an extremely high end #2 (like Bulger or Hanie) they need to bring Stanton back. Stafford and Hill are just too injury prone.

Houston Texans - Matt Leinart
(Note that backup Dan Orlovsky is a FA in 2012) - He holds a clipboard pretty well, but its a nightmare scenario if the Texans needed him long term. He could be out of the league.

Jacksonville Jaguars - Luke McCown - They have backups. Probably the end of the road unless he goes to the UFL.

Kansas City Chiefs - Brodie Croyle - First guy in NFL history to lose his first 10 starts. Bye.

Miami Dolphins - Chad Pennington, Tyler Thigpen
(Note that starter Chad Henne is a FA in 2012) - Pennington is going to try a comeback, but should retire and start coaching. Thigpen isnt much, but he could come back as a 3 if the Fins trade for a 1 or draft a guy. At this point, Henne is just riding out that contract.

Minnesota Vikings - Tarvaris Jackson, Rhett Bomar
(Farve retired, Joe Webb is still under contract for 3 more seasons) - Joe Webb is probably the guy unless they draft a QB high or make a trade. Jackson is a maybe. Bomar blows and was just signed to have a 3rd QB.

New Orleans Saints - Patrick Ramsey - I think the Saints will keep his phone number just in case, but with Chase Daniel and Drew Brees they are fine.

New York Giants - Jim Sorgi - I expect Indy to call him up. Curtis Painter is atrocious.

New York Jets - Mark Brunell, Kellen Clemens
(Note Erik Ainge and Kevin OConnell are FA's in 2012)(5 QBs???) - Not sure why the Jets had THAT many QBs. Rex will keep Brunell's phone number handy, Clemens probably goes to another team as a #3, and the Jets ride with Sanchez, Ainge, and OConnell going into camp.

Oakland Raiders - Bruce Gradkowski - Any other team would bring him back, but this is Al Davis we are talking about. Gradkowski will end up someone elses #2 and that teams fans will sleep alot better at night knowing a guy with a ton of heart and leadership ability is there if you need him.

Philadelphia Eagles - Michael Vick
(Note that Kevin Kolb is a FA in 2012) - We beat this one to deal. Vick gets the FT, Kolb may get traded because if he is mad enough he wont sign an extension.

Pittsburgh Steelers - Dennis Dixon
(Note that Charlie Batch is a FA in 2012) - Charlie Batch will finish up his contract as a Steeler because he is a solid guy. The Steelers should bring back Dixon, but you never know what will happen.

San Diego Chargers - Billy Volek - SD will bring him back. Volek and Bulger are the best #2s to run the Chargers offense.

San Francisco 49ers - Alex Smith, Troy Smith
(Note that David Carr is a FA in 2012) - I dont think Harbaugh will waste his time with Alex Smith. Troy gets a deal to be the #2 and Carr loses his spot to the drafted QB.

Seattle Seahawks - Matt Hasselbeck
(Note that Charlie Whitehurst is a FA in 2012) - Hass will be back. Past that who knows.

Tennessee Titans - Kerry Collins, Chris Simms
(Note that "starter" Vince Young will NOT be back with the team in 2011) - Simmis is trash. Easy to find a #3. Collins will come back as the starter and mentor who the Titans aquire or draft.

Washington Redskins - Rex Grossman - The Rat will bring him back.

Okay my turn :D

Where will they go? How does this affect your fantasy team, if at all?

Baltimore Ravens - Marc Bulger - I think they resign him if he does not get an offer to be a starter somewhere. He is solid, adn can run a team and in Baltimore, the run game would protect him.

Buffalo Bills - Brian Brohm (RFA) - Gone. They will draft a qB this year to develop, and they will let Fitzgerald lead. May grab two young Qbs one really late and see who develops.

Carolina Panthers - Matt Moore - gone. I see the new coach getting HIS qb, and then letting Clausen see what he or Pike can prove.

Chicago Bears - Caleb Hanie - keep him, solid #2 for Cutler

Cincinnati Bengals - Jordan Palmer
(Note that starter Carson Palmer is threatening retirement if not traded) - gone. Price for Carson opening his big mouth. They will draft a qB to develop. Keep Palmer unless he retires. Mike has Spoken, so Brown knows all and screws up more.

Cleveland Browns - Seneca Wallace - if he will stay, he will be the #2, delhomme will be gone, and McCoy the starter. A young Qb taken later in the draft would not surprise me to groom as the long term #2 or #1 if McCoy doesn't work out.

Denver Broncos - Brady Quinn - dunno: Rumor is Orton may be trade bait. I wouldn't if I were the coach, cause Tebow ain't ready yet. They might keep him as #3 if he is cheap. UFL a solid option though.

Detroit Lions - Drew Stanton - another dunno: He has as bad an injury history as Hill and Stafford. Might want some new blood into groom here.

Houston Texans - Matt Leinart
(Note that backup Dan Orlovsky is a FA in 2012) = should be gone. long gone.

Jacksonville Jaguars - Luke McCown - Meh. He keeps getting hurt.

Kansas City Chiefs - Brodie Croyle - I think they keep him for #2 and draft for future #2.

Miami Dolphins - Chad Pennington, Tyler Thigpen
(Note that starter Chad Henne is a FA in 2012) - Chad is gone. HE may try to come back, but no one will pay him. Thigpen or Henne will stay, and they will go out and either draft or sign a FA Qb to start. I don't see them keeping both Thigpen and Henne.

Minnesota Vikings - Tarvaris Jackson, Rhett Bomar
(Farve retired, Joe Webb is still under contract for 3 more seasons) - Jackson is gone. Bomar may be kept. I think they will try and get a vet in. I hope they give Webb a chance.

New Orleans Saints - Patrick Ramsey - may keep him for depth.

New York Giants - Jim Sorgi - security for Eli

New York Jets - Mark Brunell, Kellen Clemens
(Note Erik Ainge and Kevin OConnell are FA's in 2012)(5 QBs???) - Yuck all around. I think they let the old guys go.

Oakland Raiders - Bruce Gradkowski - his best fan is gone now. So is he.

Philadelphia Eagles - Michael Vick
(Note that Kevin Kolb is a FA in 2012) - Wow, this is really starting to get tough. I do think they tag Vick. But they will then totally piss off kolb, and no way he extends then. So they will absolutely have to choose between the two in 2012. I think Andy wants to get Kolb in a position to start. Just may not be with the eagles. I would keep both though...for safety for the next Vick injury.

Pittsburgh Steelers - Dennis Dixon
(Note that Charlie Batch is a FA in 2012) - they will keep him.

San Diego Chargers - Billy Volek - will keep hiim as back up for Rivers.

San Francisco 49ers - Alex Smith, Troy Smith
(Note that David Carr is a FA in 2012) - they will get a new Qb in the draft. They may go out and sign a vet and draft a kid as well. IF they do this...Troy may get a shot to stay as #2 while the youngster develops.

Seattle Seahawks - Matt Hasselbeck
(Note that Charlie Whitehurst is a FA in 2012) - I think they try to get one more year out of Hass.

Tennessee Titans - Kerry Collins, Chris Simms
(Note that "starter" Vince Young will NOT be back with the team in 2011) - I think they resign Collins. But they have to draft a young Qb to take over. OR go and get a vet, and use collins as back up, which is his best option.

Washington Redskins - Rex Grossman - may be kept as a back up, if they jettison McNabb.

Good points Phic. My only question to you is how can the Chiefs keep a guy who clearly cant play at this level and has the worst off the bat record in NFL history as protection of Cassel goes down?

I hate to say it, but this could be a landing spot for Alex Smith if he takes the vet minumum.

The only situation that really concerns me is Michael Vick / Kevin Kolb. I was worried when we went to Vick that we'd lose Kolb for good and I think he's a promising young talent. If we do re-sign Michael Vick I'd like to see us trade Kevin Kolb to a team that needs a QB, because I feel getting value for him to start somewhere would be in his and the team's best interest.

What would YOU asking for Kolb in return for your Eagles?

This might sound crazy but I'd start the bidding very high. I'd come to a team like the Arizona Cardinals and package Kolb with a 4th round pick to get the #5 pick in the first round.

Now you're probably saying "wait, that's insane. why would anyone give up the #5 pick for Kevin Kolb?" Well, if you are the Cardinals and you're looking at free agents and draft picks... there's just nothing there. Your QB situation is a train wreck and the GM and team management are probably on thin ice. Are you willing to go through another year of frustration at QB? Getting Kevin Kolb would probably win you that division. Not to mention you'd sell tickets and have someone to throw the ball to Larry Fitzgerald.

In terms of ordinary compensation I'd want a late 1st rounder or early 2nd rounder for Kolb. But I feel that the situation is desperate enough for some teams that I'd ask for more.

Actually Bird I think it makes perfect sense, especially going after a team like Arizona who is in QB hell. Kolb is at least a somewhat proven commodity.

Kolb is the best available QB out there and I have been hearing a lot of intel that says this years QB crop in the draft isn't really starter ready. Both the Cards and the Niners could use and instant Kolb injection to possibly jump into contender status.

Exactly

And I think whichever team gets him (49ers or Cardinals) wins that division as a result.

That these two teams play in the same weak division should make the asking price higher than normal.

According to a story in Miami news paper today, they are asking a 1st and 3rd round pick. High, but worth it. My guess is it will be lower than that...if they even deal him.

 Luck was clearly head and shoulders above this group that is going. I have not seen alot on the Missouri kid, but I know that Cam Newton, and the others are not starting material right now. They all need time to mature more.

Looks like Bulger might be going to Arizona
I don't know that one stops the other. Having Kolb, who is still somewhat untried, and Bulger to help tutor him would be a solid fix at Qb for the Cards.

Locker flat out sucks

Locker flat out sucks

Call me silly, but I kind of like Mallet. But he needs the right offense and set up. He needs time to learn the NFL way. If he is put on a team that needs a starter now, he will fail. As will Newton and Locker and others. Actually, I agree with you that Locker is awful.

Some interesting FA available there. Hopefully Jax steps up and makes a move. Gradkowski would be interesting here but like everybody else with their team, i'd like to see Kolb become our next starter. Either way Jax needs a QB and thru FA might be the best way. Of course Jax could not go for a QB, keep Gerrard and play for 1st draft pick to get Luck. They go that route and might have Fisher and Luck in Jax year after next.

Go post your thoughts on him in the Ryan Mallet thread in the Draft forum. Id heard he has Jimmy Clausen's attitude and Karl from Sling Blade's brain.

Philadelphia Eagles - Michael Vick
(Note that Kevin Kolb is a FA in 2012) - Wow, this is really starting to get tough. I do think they tag Vick. But they will then totally piss off kolb, and no way he extends then. Okay, per ESPN radio yesterday, and other "rumor" sources - Philly will Tag Vick, and will start entertaining trade offers for Kolb.

what this tells me -
First, they really like Vick. No surprise after last year.
Second, they don't like Vick's price for a long term deal yet. So they tag him, see if he repeats and survives, and then they decide.
Third: they hopefully will do the right thing for Kolb and trade him where he could start. A must in my opinion, as with the Tag of Vick, he won't start, and he won't resign next year when he is a UFA. Get solid value, and give the kid a chance elsewhere.

Not the best of all, and they could still hold onto Kolb, but if I am San Fran or Arizona or Jacksonville...I jump hard here!
