ESPN's John Clayton expects rookies Brandon LaFell and Armanti Edwards to play with Steve Smith in three-wide receiver sets this season.

Despite being passed on the depth chart by Kenneth Moore last season, Dwayne Jarrett will be in the training camp mix as a "veteran" option. Jarrett has shown nothing as a pro, however, whereas LaFell and Edwards are already turning heads in minicamp. Clayton calls converted QB Edwards possibly "the steal of the draft."

Panthers WR Steve Smith fractured his left arm playing flag football over the weekend and is in danger missing all of training camp.

He had surgery Sunday. Smith fractured the same arm he broke in Week 16 of last season. Broken arms often make for clean recoveries, but it becomes a bigger concern when the patient suffers repeated fractures, as Bengals S Roy Williams can attest. We liked Smith's chances of having a big bounce-back season with Jake Delhomme gone, but expectations now have to be scaled back. Promising rookie Armanti Edwards will get more practice reps.

The agent for Steve Smith (fractured arm) says his client will be healthy for Opening Day.

"I'm not trying to play doctor, but I don't think he'll miss any games," said agent Derrick Fox. According to ESPN, Smith's fracture happened to the same arm as last season but "in a different spot." He's expected to be healthy late in the preseason, though this remains a situation to monitor closely.

Here's the cbssports.com story,
Panthers receiver Steve Smith will miss the start of training camp with a broken left forearm. Playing flag football with children at his camp Saturday, the four-time Pro Bowl wideout fell and fractured his left arm. He'll be sidelined for at least the first couple of weeks of camp, but is expected to be ready for the season opener Sept. 12 at the Giants. Smith had surgery June 20th to have a small plate and screws inserted in his arm. Fox said while it's the same arm he broke at the end of last season, it's in a different spot and not his wrist. Smith suffered no nerve damage, is expected to make a full recovery and could return as soon as midway through the preseason. "Steve talked to me and he feels terrible about it," Panthers general manager Marty Hurney said. "Now his focus is on rehabilitating process and getting back as quickly as he can."

Analysis: Assuming there are no further setbacks from the injury, Smith could be back on the field as soon as mid-August. If that doesn't happen and if he misses more time, then he'd be more of a liability for Fantasy owners. We'll keep tabs on this for you, but Smith should remain a good No. 2 Fantasy WR -- heck, maybe some owners in your league will get jittery on Smith and pass him up, giving you the opportunity to take him as your No. 3 wideout, which would be fantastic.

I wonder if he was fighting some 13 year old boy in camp for the pass when he fell. The man is a competitor for sure.

cbssports.com,
The Charlotte Observer reports that WR Kenny Moore will step in for Steve Smith while the star receiver rehabs from a broken left arm. That suggests that rookie WRs Brandon LaFell and Armanti Edwards won't see their roles change in training camp. LaFell is in a battle for a starting role with underachieving veteran Dwayne Jarrett while Edwards seems locked into a role as a kick-returner and potential slot receiver. If anything, both receivers will receive a few more reps with quarterback Matt Moore, which doesn't hurt.

Analysis: We like LaFell and Edwards long-term but aren't too bullish on them for this season. LaFell might unseat Jarrett and could be a decent source of stats this season, but he's not someone worth reaching for in seasonal drafts -- for now. Edwards is more of a long-term project for the Panthers, and so Fantasy owners in single-season leagues should ignore him, too. We think both guys are good late-round picks in dynasty/keeper leagues and believe LaFell is a solid early- to middle-round choice in rookie-only formats while Edwards is a middle- to late-round pick.

rotoworld,
Doctors advised Steve Smith that he should be sidelined for 10 weeks after he fractured his arm over the weekend.

That timetable would force Smith to miss all of training camp, though he could return for the final preseason game. The first regular season game would be 12 weeks removed from the injury, so Smith shouldn't be in danger of missing the opener. While the injury makes Smith a riskier pick, it also presents an opportunity to pick him up a round or three later than he should be going this summer.

That flushing sound you hear...is all the S.Smith owners who have him this year either by keeper, dynasty or early redraft. They just puked. :xpuke:

(Rotoworld) Steve Smith acknowledged that he put himself and his team in a bad situation by playing in a flag football league and fracturing his arm. Analysis: Smith said he was "just having fun" and it was a "freak accident," but he has also resigned not to play again until he's retired from the NFL. The Panthers will not attempt to collect on Smith's breach of contract. The 31-year-old vows to be ready for the first game of the season.

rotoworld,
Steve Smith arrived at Panthers' camp without a cast on his broken left arm.

It's a good sign, but Smith hasn't been able to lift weights and it's unknown when he'll be cleared to practice. We're tentatively expecting to see him toward the tail end of the preseason and fully expect him to be ready for Week 1. There is little risk of aggravation even though Smith has now fractured his left arm twice in a year.

(FFChamps) Steve Smith arrived to Panthers training camp without a cast on his left arm which he broke at the end of last season (and again while playing flag-football 6 weeks ago). A confident Smith joked that he’s “more concerned about where to find toothpaste” than when he’ll begin practicing again.

Steve Smith (fractured arm) is willing to bet his game check that he'll be active and starting in Week 1 against the Giants.

There's little doubt Smith will be back as much as two weeks before the opener, and he has extra incentive against the Giants. Safety Michael Johnson laid the hit on him that resulted in his original broken arm late last season. "I'm going after him," Smith said. Johnson should be shaking in his cleats. Seriously.

Steve Smith (fractured arm) was activated from the training camp PUP list on Monday.

Smith is already back on the practice, though he's not yet in full pads. The Panthers will likely hold him out of all preseason action, but he's obviously well ahead of schedule. Smith is a legit top-12 fantasy option this year.
