Culpepper reworks contract with Lions to ensure he gets shot at making roster

He deferred his roster bonus due date from Feb 27th to later in the preseason. Slick move on his part now that Dan Orlovsky is a free agent. Culpepper will have another year with the team and now stands a good chance at winning the starting job for the Lions....which is kind of like being the best loser.

With a portion of a season under his belt and a full training camp, I think Dante can be an effective QB for a couple years while the Lions focus on the truly important parts of rebuilding a team, OL and defense. If Smith picks up where he left off at the end of 2008, a decent running game could do wonders for their passing game.

He's also not afraid to chuck it down the field, so Calvin Johnson owners should be happy with this news. :xpopcorn:

Does this spell Andre Smith for the first overall pick?

No. I don't think so. Culpepper is not the long term solution, and new management also isn't high on Stanton. I still think they go Qb with the first pick.....they need a franchise Qb to build around eventually.
