After failing to lock Aubrayo Franklin into a long-term contract, the San Francisco 49ers notified the nose tackle on Tuesday that they are giving him the franchise tag, according to a source.

Franklin joined New England Patriots nose tackle Vince Wilfork as the first two players to be given the franchise tag in 2010. Under the franchise tag, both Franklin and Wilfork has a one-year guaranteed contract offer at $7.003 million.

I like the move for SF. Signing Franklin was key and 7 million isn't outlandish for the way he played in 2009. Does a great job of keeping blockers off Willis. I think the franchise tag was more of SF wanting to see him have another good season before they locked him into a longer contract vs not being able to lock him in longer now.
